“Unfortunately, acetaminophen can be harmful to children even if it is given properly..."
Not too long ago, while waiting for my next appointment, a friend came up and informed me that she was unable to find Tylenol. There was a shortage and she was slightly concerned.
“Do you have anything?” she asked a bit frantically.
Ummm... for what? (I like specifics, force of habit).
She went on to explain that she sometimes feels like she needs to resort to it for her grandsons teething pain, fever or
ear aches. I let her know that there are many homeopathic remedies to address such
ills, they also do not carry the potential side effects that Tylenol can bring while relieving the child, albeit, temporarily of the pain.
The following article discusses such harms and has a very sobering paragraph that
should be heeded by parents and caregivers;
“Unfortunately, acetaminophen can be harmful to children even if it is given properly. A study conducted in more than 30 countries shows that, if used in a child’s first year of life, acetaminophen increases the chances of developing asthma, eczema, and allergic runny nose later in childhood. In fact, 6-7 year old who took the medication for fever during the first year of life were three times as likely to have asthma symptoms. Other research has shown that when pregnant women take acetaminophen, they are much more likely to have children with asthma, bronchitis, and wheezing.”

I don’t admonish my clients for their choices but I do offer another way. For example, in
the case of a teething child who is also irritable and in a great deal of pain, I often start
with Chamomilla. For the child who experiences a high fever with quick onset, we think
of Belladonna or Aconitum. Ear pain? Hepar sulph, Chamomilla or Belladonna could be
just the ticket if the symptom picture fits.
Homeopathy offers us autonomy and freedom from the fear that comes when you don’t
know what to do. There is a time and a place for drugs, but there is much that can be
done at home in the capable hands of mothers and caregivers.
There is another way...
