For some, it's more like morning, noon and night sickness...
Ahhh... the joys of pregnancy... so much to look forward to, so many preparations that go into getting your home ready for that precious gift that will soon be in your arms. The last thing a busy mother needs is another bout of morning sickness to slow her down.
During the first trimester of pregnancy, many women experience nausea and vomiting, also known as morning sickness.
The medical term for severe morning sickness is "hyperemesis gravidarum" (hi-per-EM-eh-sis grav-ih-DARE-um), which means "excessive vomiting during pregnancy." And you should contact your health care provider if symptoms persist.
For most, morning sickness is a nuisance and generally resolves on its own by the end of the first trimester, and does not end up requiring medical intervention.
Homeopathy has a stellar reputation for dealing with such inconveniences and discomfort. Below are some of the top remedies used to help bring a mother relief.
Colchicum 30c - The woman needing this remedy cannot stand the smell of food, especially cooking food. She gags from the mere mention of food, and she loathes the smell or sight of it, which can bring on nausea and vomiting. There may be a craving for carbonated drinks or alcohol. She is so sensitive to smell that any strong odours can bring about stomach complaints, she is so sensitive that she can smell food that others cannot. She is made worse from any motion, even turning the head can bring about symptoms. Emotionally she may be depressed, irritable and sensitive.
Ipecac 30c - There can be persistent nausea and vomiting with a disgust for food, though not as pronounced as with the Colchicum. Nothing seem to make it better and the nausea is not relieved by the vomiting. Mucous, undigested food and even blood may be present in the vomit. They may be much saliva in the mouth and she is thirstless. The relentless nausea causes the sufferer to become peevish and irritable. She is worse from lying down, and taking a dose of Ipecac before she gets out of bed can help.
Lacticum acidum 30c - This remedy is especially suited to pale, anemic women. who are worse in the morning, but better after eating, especially after eating breakfast. There is often a sour or bitter taste in the mouth, as well as heartburn and nausea. If you are a smoker it is very important to stop, not only for the sake of your health, and the developing baby, but because smoking will aggravate all of the symptoms in those women who need this remedy. Her appetite it generally not affected.
Nux Vomica 30c - There is nausea and vomiting with much retching and the person feels worse in the morning and after eating. Unlike Ipecac, people who need this remedy often feel better from vomiting. They may have a desire to vomit yet not be able to.
When I consulted with my doula, who uses homeopathy almost exclusively with her clients, she let me know that she tells the mothers to take the remedy twice daily. However, if the morning sickness is absolutely horrible, she will instruct them to use it hourly until very much better and then back off to twice daily, and then take as needed.
If you are finding it difficult to differentiate between two different remedies, they can be alternated. So for example, Nux vomica at 9am and Ipecac at 12pm, Nux vomica at 3pm and Ipecac at 6pm. You may find one working better than the other or you may notice that both are helping. Stick with what works and don't tinker with success!
Pregnancy should not be a miserable event, it should be joyeous and sweetly memorable.
My hope is that one of the above remedies aids you in that time.
There is another way...
